Interesting Social Media Reads – December 11, 2012
The impact of social media upon society and business is increasing. This is becoming increasing apparent regardless of where you look. I have found three recent articles that are documenting this change. They are summarized below:
Increasingly successful real estate agents are embracing Twitter and using social media to replace cold calling as a business development exercise.
This post is a series of infographics that shows makes the following points.
- The amount of time spent on social media is increasing.
- Social media platforms are still growing. Facebook is still king in absolute numbers but Pinterest is coming on strong with a 1,047% growth rate this past year followed by Google at 80%, Tumblr at 55%, and Twitter at 13%. Facebook is down -4%.
- Social media is becoming more about mobile social media. Time spent on social media increased 37% from 88 billion minutes in July 2012 to 121 billion minutes in July 2012. While PC use to access social media decreased 4%, access through apps or mobile devices increased 85% and 82%, respectively.
The take away from all of this is that while social media is about technology, it is primarily about relationship and interaction with human beings. It is a platform of self expression where we share our experiences, interests, and business connections. It is no longer limited to the PC but is rather becoming more mobile.
Leading companies are embracing social media and using it not only to improve sales, marketing, human resources, and customer service. Some companies are using social media to redefine their value chains. I will write more about these companies in future posts.
